EMI WARNING

ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI) FROM RADIO WAVE

SOURCES

Powered motorized scooters may be susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is interfering electromagnetic energy (EM) emitted from sources such as radio stations, TV stations, amateur radio (HAM) transmitters, twoway radios, and cellular phones. The interference (from radio wave sources) can cause the powered scooter to release its brakes, move by itself, or move in unintended directions. It can also permanently damage the powered scooter's control system. The intensity of the interfering EM energy can be measured in volts per meter (V\M). Each powered scooter can resist up to a certain intensity. This is called "immunity level". The higher the immunity level, the greater the protection. At this time, current technology is capable of achieving at least a 20V\M immunity level, which would provide useful protection from the more common sources of radiated EMI. This powered scooter's immunity level as shipped is not known at this time. Testing is currently underway. There are a number of sources of relatively intense electromagnetic fields in everyday environment. Some of these sources are obvious and easy to avoid. Others are not apparent and exposure is unavoidable. However, we believe that by following the warning listed below, your risk to EMI will be minimized.

The sources of radiated EMI can be broadly classified into three types:

1.Handheld portable transceivers (transmittersreceivers) with the antenna mounted directly on the transmitting unit. Examples include: citizens band (CB) radios, "walkie talkie", security, fire, and police transceivers, cellular telephones, and other personal communication devices.

**NOTE: Some cellular telephones and similar devices transmit signals

while they are ON, even when not being used.

2.MediumRange mobile transceivers, such as those used in police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and taxis. These usually have the antenna mounted on the outside of the vehicle.

3.Longrange transmitters and transceivers, such as commercial broadcast transmitters (radio and TV broadcast antenna towers) and amateur (HAM) radios. "NOTE: Other types of handheld devices, such as cordless phones, laptop computers, AM/FM radios, TV sets, CD players, and cassette players, and small appliances, such as electric shavers and hair dyers, so far as we know, are not likely to cause problems to your powered scooter.

POWERED SCOOTER ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI)

Because EM energy rapidly becomes more intense as one moves closer to the transmitting antenna (source), the EM fields ED SCOOTER ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI)

Because EM energy rapidly becomes more intense as one moves closer to the transmitting antenna (source), the EM fields from handheld radio sources (transceivers) are of special concern. It is possible to unintentionally bring high levels of EM energy very close to the powered scooter's control system while using these devices. This can affect powered scooter movement and braking. Therefore, the warnings listed below are recommended to prevent possible interference with the control system of the powered scooter.

WARNINGS

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from sources such as radio and TV stations, amateur radio (HAM) transmitter, twoway radios, and cellular phones can affect powered scooters. The following warnings listed below should reduce the chance of unintended brake release or powered scooter movement which could result in serious injury.

1.Do not operate handheld transceivers (transmittersreceivers), such as citizens band (CB) radios, or turn ON personal communication devices, such as cellular phones, while the powered scooter is turned ON;

2.Be aware of nearby transmitters, such as radio or TV stations, and try to avoid coming close to them;

3.If unintended movement or brake release occurs, turn the powered scooter OFF as soon as it is safe;

4

4.Be aware that adding accessories or components, or modifying the powered scooter, may make it more susceptible to EMI (NOTE: There is no easy way to evaluate the overall immunity of the powered scooter).

5.Report all incidents of unintended movement or brake to the powered scooter manufacturer, and note whether there is a source of EMI nearby.

7.Free Wheeling Device: (See Figure 6A & 613) This is located on either the left or right hand of the scooter depending on year and model number of the SUNRUNNERTM. It is easy to locate as it has a red handle lever (See Figure 6A & 6B). To freewheel the scooter, push down on the lever. To engage the

brake again, simply pull the lever up. You will find now that you are not able to push your scooter.

If the scooter is in free wheeling mode, when you turn your scooter on and depress your speed control

nothing happens. It is good practice to return the free wheel lever to the drive (up) position whenever it

is unattended and/or when freewheel is no longer required.

AntiTip Wheels: (See Figure 613) These wheels are located on the rear frame of the scooter. On older models the antitip wheels are removable by pulling the pin. On the new SUNRUNNER TM the antitip wheels are not removable.

MOUNTING

For your first sessions, be sure you and the SUNRUNNER TM are on a level surface. Put the key in its slot, but leave it turned off. Stand behind the SUNRUNNER TM seat, and reach down to the "Seat Lock Lever". It is located on the left side directly under the armrest. Grasp the knob on the bar and pull up, releasing the seat. It will now turn easily to meet you. If need be, you can lock the seat in any position to make it steady before you sit down. If you have a cane, place it in the optional cane rack. Seat yourself and swing the seat to face the handlebars. Make sure you are straight, then reach under the seat to the bar again with your left hand. Push the bar down to lock the seat in position. Next, turn the "Speed Control Dial" to slow, and turn key to ON position. Press the right thumb control to start you in a forward motion. To stop simply let go, this will apply your brake.

DISMOUNTING

Before dismounting, Always turn key to OFF position. Locate the seat lever and pull up. Now you can swing the seat away, lock it, pick up your cane if applicable, and ease onto your feet. Use your armrests if you require steadying rather than the front tiller when mounting or dismounting your SUNRUNNERTM

PARKING IN PUBLIC

If you need to park and leave your SUNRUNNERTM, simply remove your key. This will keep the brake on, and will make your scooter difficult to move. It is best to leave it in sight of someone like a store clerk who can watch it for you. Another precaution is to note your serial number (located on the four wheeled scooters on the left hand side of front frame and on the three wheeled scooters on the left rear of frame) and date of purchase on your warranty in this manual.

BASIC DRIVING

Make sure you are properly seated on the SUNRUNNER TM , and that the "Speed Control Dial" is turned to slow.

Push the "Thumb Lever Control", as described earlier. You will very gently accelerate. Release the lever, and you will gently stop. Practice these two basic functions until you get used to them.

Steering the SUNRUNNER TM is easy and logical. Just be sure to remember to give wide clearance when turning so that the rear wheels clear any obstacle.

Short cutting a sidewalk corner can mean the back wheel will go off the sidewalk, causing problems if the corner is very rough. Again, avoid this at all times by steering an exaggerated wide arc around the obstacle.

If you must steer in a tight spot, such as entering a doorway or when turning around, stop, turn the handlebars to where you want to go, then apply power gently. This will make the SUNRUNNER TM turn very sharp. It will still go gently, and with complete stability.

turn very sharp. It will still go gently, and with complete stability.

Backing up requires attention. Turn your "Speed Control Dial" to slow before you back up. Push the left "Thumb Lever Control". Remember, when you back up you have to steer in the opposite direction to the way you want to go.

Remember: If it is a tight turn, turn your steering column before applying power. Steer wide of all corners and obstacles.

Going through doors, with back wheels: If you're not moving, your rear wheel is probably caught. Reverse and try again. Take your time.

CONTROL THROUGH THE TIGHT

SPOTS

Chances are good that when you start really using your SUNRUNNER TM you will meet some obstacles that will require some practice to drive through smoothly. Here are some common obstacles, with tips that will help master them quickly. You will soon be in control through heavy doors, up and down ramps, up and over curbs, through grass, gravel, and up grades with surprising ease by following these tips.

IN CONTROL THROUGH DOORS

Approach an unfamiliar door slowly, sizing it up. Does it have a knob or push bar? Does it open toward or away? Think in terms of using the power of the SUNRUNNER TM do the work for you!

Hold the doorknob or bar in one hand and apply the power with the other hand. If it is a self closing door, you can go through allowing the door to close behind you, if you go quickly enough. If not, just stop when you are clear of the door and push it closed.

If the door opens toward you, hold the knob or bar with one hand and gently press on your left thumb lever, and allow the gentle reverse power to do the work. When the door is open wide enough, push the forward lever and go ahead quickly, leaving your hand on the door to keep it free of the scooter and letting go as you pass the doorjamb. It is an easy technique.

IN CONTROL ON RAMPS

With the ADA (American Disabilities Act) more buildings require ramps for scooter access. Some have a switchback in the middle, and good cornering is required.

Just take wide swings with your front wheels around any tight corners, so the back

15

wheels follow a wide arc to stay clear of the corner. When you have stopped while facing uphill, starting up again simply requires that you apply forward power.

Going down any ramp or hill, keep the dial set to "Slow". This will keep you in a safely controlled descent. If you wish to stop completely, release the thumb control lever slowly.

IN CONTROL OVER CURBS

Most curbs have wheelchair access ramps at intersections. If there is not an access ramp, and you cannot find a driveway ramp either, you may be able to go over the curb, if it is small enough. The curb must be under 2" if you have 10" wheels.

BE CAREFUL. Going up or down a curb must be done ONLY AT A DIRECT 90 DEGREE ANGLE. Always approach the curb so that both back wheels go over at the same time, in the same way. Never go up or down hills on an angle. This can cause stability problems.

Going down a curb is simple, but must be done slowly to avoid a jarring thump. Slowly drive the front wheel(s) over the curb. Use as little power as possible.

Going up a curb, turn your speed adjustment dial to "5". Start 2 to 3 feet back from the curb. Apply power gently, increasing as needed. Steer straight and go straight up. Be prepared to feel a bump as each tire reaches and climbs the curb. Again, with a little practice, you will find this procedure easy to do.

IN CONTROL OVER GRASS, GRAVEL AND GRADES

SUNRUNNERTM performs admirably in grass, gravel and on hills. But you must NOT exceed the parameters set down in this manual. Please refer to the Rules For Safe Use. Safety must come first. If you are unsure about any situation, avoid it.

Feel free to use your SUNRUNNER TM on lawns or in park areas. Avoid long, unkempt grass. Otherwise, just follow the rules.

16

Packed gravel such as on driveways or roads will present no problem. Loose, deep gravel should be avoided, as well as loosely packed sand. Because of the power of your SUNRUNNER TM scooter, you are able to climb steep hills. BUT the maximum safe grade limit is 8° or an incline of approximately 4 to 1 (see below). The reason for this is to ensure proper stability. Remember, read and follow the Rules For Safe Use at the front of this manual.

Maximum Climbing Angle: 80 ' with anti tip device

DISMANTLING THE

SUNRUNNER

OVERVIEW OF SAFETY PIN & PLUGS

The SUNRUNNER TM is manufactured with portability in mind. Dismantling the SUNRUNNER TM can be done quickly and no tools are required:

1.        Safety Pin: ( See Figure 7) This pin, attached on a chain is the device used to separate the front from the rear of the scooter. This pin is also used to hold the antitip wheels (older models) in place.

Figure 7

2.Electric Plugs: (See Figure 8) These plugs consist of a shrouded male part and a shrouded female

part. The plugs are polarized (can only connect one way) and are easy to connect and disconnect. These plugs are also colour coded. The plugs are as follows: two battery plugs (red & black), charger plug (blue), control plug (yellow), motor plug (white). To disconnect the plugs, simply take the plug

and locate plug release (on top of plug) depress and pull the two parts of the plugs apart.

Main Control Plug: (See Figure 9) Located behind the batteries on the left (yellow in colour). Locate

the top of the plug, depress the plug release and pull the two parts of the plug apart.

Figure 9

18

4.Battery Straps: (See Figure 10) This strap secures the batteries in place. Because all the straps are Velcro there are no buckles to fasten or unfasten. There are also two battery straps that go around each battery. These allow you to lift each battery up.

5.Battery Charger Plug: , (See Figure 11) Located behind the batteries on the left side ( blue plug).

Locate the top of the plug, depress the plug release and pull the two parts of the plug apart.

6.Adjustable Tiller Lever: (See Figure 12) This lever is located on the left side of the tiller. By pushing the lever you can make the tiller constantly adjustable. By pulling the lever you can adjust and lock Figure 11 the tiller in three separate positions.

7.Carry Handle: (See Figure 13) This red coloured handle is located on the front of the scooter on the SUNRUNNER TM. This allows you to pick up the front assembly of the scooter. Please never pick up the front assembly by the shroud (See Figure 131).

19

Figure 12

The SUNRUNNER TM dismantles into 5 basic parts, (See Figure 14) as follows:

1.THE SEAT, mounted on a base with removable arm rests.

2. THE BATTERIES, with Velcro battery straps.  THE FRAME, housing the wheels and power train assembly. This splits apart as follows: a) The front wheels) and platform assembly. b) The rear wheels and power train assembly. These parts fit together with the safety pin, (See Figure 7) which is built into each part. The rear cover. This fits over the batteries and power train assembly.

Place the SUNRUNNER T"'' on a flat surface with at least 5 ' x 10' of clear floor space. Pull the key out. Start by standing behind the seat, facing the handlebars. Put your left hand down to the seat lock lever knob, below the left armrest. Pull the knob upward toward you releasing the seat. Place your right hand on the seat and with a firm grasp pull directly up. The seat will come out. Place it to the side. Remove the rear cover simply by lifting it from the scooter. Place it to the side.

Release the plugs on the batteries as discussed under electrical plugs.

Release Velcro battery strap which secures the batteries. On each battery there is a strap. Use this

strap to lift the batteries and place them aside.  To split the frame simply pull the safety pin. Now grasp the handle on the rear power train and the loop at the front platform assembly and gently pull apart.

Next pull the steering column towards the floor of the platform. Now the scooter is ready to transport.                                                                                                                Figure 14
